His efforts to showcase this painting earlier were unsuccessful until its recent loan by a new owner.

Frank Auerbach, aged 93, is showcasing one of his cherished paintings, “Primrose Hill, Hot Summer Evening” (1974-75), for the first time in 50 years at the exhibition “Auerbach: Portraits of London” (4 October – 7 December) in London. Known for depicting Primrose Hill throughout different seasons, Auerbach painted it over 40 times from 1954 until the late 1980s, although most of his works are in private collections. Auerbach attempted multiple times to include this particular piece in a retrospective at the Hayward Gallery in 1978, but was unsuccessful until its recent loan by a new private owner for this exhibition. The exhibition not only features this landscape but also other urban landscapes and includes works previously seen only once. This unique showcase, arranged by Offer Waterman and Francis Outred, presents a rare opportunity to view Auerbach’s finest landscape works, all of which are not for sale.

Frank Auerbach has explored Primrose Hill through numerous paintings over decades, establishing it as a recurring theme in his art. Despite efforts to include his “Hot Summer Evening” painting in earlier exhibitions, it remained unseen publicly until now, marking a significant moment for Auerbach and art enthusiasts. The exhibition will highlight Auerbach’s lesser-known landscapes alongside his more famous portraits, providing insight into his artistic range. It represents a collaboration between notable art experts and presents a chance for the public to appreciate Auerbach’s esteemed yet largely private collection.

The upcoming exhibition features one of Frank Auerbach’s long-unseen masterpieces, reflecting his dedication to portraying Primrose Hill. This showcase will not only highlight his landscape works but also his significant contributions to portraiture, offering a rare public glimpse into his artistic journey over several decades without any artworks being for sale.
