Verizon Boosts Fiber Technology for Faster, More Reliable Internet

2 min read

Verizon is ramping up its fiber technology to deliver faster, more reliable internet to its customers. The company recently conducted a successful trial in its commercial fiber network in metro Long Island, New York, in collaboration with networking company Cisco. The trial showcased increased speed, reliability, and overall capacity for Verizon’s metropolitan fiber network.

During the trial, a 1Tbps single wavelength was transmitted over a distance of 205km, passing through 14 fiber central offices. Verizon also achieved a transmission of 800Gbps over 305km and a 1.2Tbps wavelength traversing three offices. These advancements were made possible by upgrading the optical to electrical conversion cards, allowing data to travel farther and faster across Verizon’s fiber network.

In addition to improving data rates, the new optics technology from Cisco reduces the need for signal regeneration along the fiber cable, leading to a more efficient network and lower operating costs.

Verizon’s commitment to fiber technology extends beyond the trial. The company plans to expand its fiber-to-the-premise (FTTP) presence in the northeast of the US, bringing high-speed internet to more locations.

Adam Koeppe, Senior Vice President of Technology Planning at Verizon, emphasized the importance of fiber in providing a superior broadband experience for consumers and serving as the backbone of their wireless network. He stated, “As we continue to see customers using more data in more varied ways, it is critical we continue to stay ahead of our customers’ demands by using our resources efficiently.”

Bill Gartner, Senior Vice President and General Manager for Cisco optical systems and optics, praised the trial as a demonstration of their commitment to innovation and cost reduction. He highlighted the versatility of the Verizon infrastructure built with the Cisco NCS 2000 open line system, which supports multiple generations of optics.

Verizon’s efforts to enhance fiber technology align with the growing demand for faster and more reliable internet connections. By investing in fiber infrastructure, Verizon aims to provide an exceptional customer experience and meet the evolving needs of its users.
