Dance party
A dance with live music and a “great floor” is held each Monday from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Moose Lodge, 4328 Campton Road, Eureka. Admission is $9.

Growing roses
On Thursday at 7 p.m. at the regular meeting of the Humboldt Rose Society, rosarians (rose experts) will do a presentation on building soil with videos on the soil food web. The meeting is open to the public.

The meeting is at Christ Episcopal Church in the Lewis Room, at 15th and H streets in Eureka. Entry is on 15th Street and ample parking is available at 14th and G streets.

Holiday baskets
The 123 Redwood Rangers and Arcata Presbyterian Church “Holiday Basket Sign-Up” for residents of Arcata, Manila, Blue Lake and Samoa is starting this month.

This program is for families with children. People must apply in person at 670 11th St. in Arcata, on Nov. 11 and 12 from 1 to 3 p.m. and Nov. 12 and 16 from 6 to 8 p.m. Bring a picture ID and proof of residence.

Baskets must be picked up in person on Dec. 20 from 3 to 7pm at Arcata Presbyterian Church. Baskets will include turkey, fresh vegetables, canned and dried foods, and toys for the children. Call Dan at 707-407-5774 for more information.

Birding tour
The Redwood Region Audubon Society will offer a free guided birding tour at Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge on Nov. 12 from 9 to 11 a.m.

Meet leader Ralph Bucher at the visitor center for this two-mile walk along a flat, packed gravel trail that is easily accessible.

Just outside of town, this refuge offers astounding and easy access to tidally influenced habitats, including mudflats, riparian vegetation, conifers, and a bay that hosts a variety of geese, raptors, shorebirds and waders. Email Ralph to sign up at [email protected].

Mystery dinner
The Arcata Veterans Memorial Hall and the American Legion, Arcata Post 274, will be hosting a murder mystery dinner experience on Nov. 17 and 18 to benefit local veterans and the North Coast Rape Crisis Team.

At this event, titled “Entrées and Espionage,” guests will join together at the Arcata Veterans Hall to celebrate the retirement of the International Conspiracy Collective’s most esteemed spy, but during dinner, things run awry and attendees must now solve the murder of a party guest.

Throughout the night, guests will be treated to a variety of interactive performances, appreciate live music and enjoy dinner from Lockhart BBQ (vegan options available).

Dump Day
Caltrans District 1 and the city of Blue Lake will hold “Clean California Dump Day” in partnership with North Fork Lumber Company, Humboldt Sanitation and Bye Bye Mattress on Nov. 18 at the North Fork Lumber Company Lot, 1185 Maple Creek Road, Korbel.

Dump Day — which runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or until capacity is reached — allows residents to drop accepted large items for free. Dump Day events were made possible through Gov. Gavin Newsom’s Clean California initiative.

Free Dump Day collection is limited to household items including furniture, appliances, off-rim tires (limit nine per load), mattresses, scrap metal and other large, bulky items. No tires on rims, construction materials, electronics, business waste, hazardous waste, treated wood waste or asbestos of any type will be accepted.

Caltrans reminds motorists to properly secure and tarp all cargo loads prior to driving. Loads that are not tied down, enclosed or secured by tarps or other means will not be accepted.
