The Link Between Health Technology Assessment and Medical Device Purchasing Decisions

A recent study published in the journal Value in Health found limited evidence linking health technology assessment (HTA) processes to medical device purchasing decisions. The study, conducted by the ISPOR Medical Devices and Diagnostics Special Interest Group, reviewed 11 studies from various countries and found that there is a lack of conclusive evidence on the impact of HTA on device procurement. While HTA is important in assessing the value of medical devices, there are challenges in applying value frameworks to them. Medical devices have unique characteristics and stakeholders may have different perspectives on their value. The use of HTA in device purchasing varies across different regions, and there is a growing trend towards local evaluations. However, national or regional assessments are still needed. Further research is required to better understand the relationship between HTA and procurement and to promote evidence-based decision making.
