Revolutionizing Transportation Technology: The MRANTI AV XL

3 min read

Hey there, have you heard about the new MRANTI Autonomous Vehicles Experimental Lab (AV XL)? It’s a game-changer for transportation technology and innovation in Malaysia. The lab, launched by Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang, is set to drive the nation forward in the world of transportation tech. With the ability to boost innovation and turn ideas into real-world impact, the AV XL is a big deal.

Autonomous vehicles (AV) are vehicles that can operate without human control. While this might sound a bit scary, it’s actually an exciting opportunity for the future of mobility. Did you know that we already have AV in use today? The Kuala Lumpur monorail, mass rapid transit (MRT), and light rapid transit (LRT) systems are all examples of AV that run without human operators.

The MRANTI AV XL is the result of a partnership between MRANTI and Futurise Sdn Bhd, a company under the Ministry of Finance. It’s also supported by the Transport Ministry (MOT) and is the driving force behind the Malaysia Autonomous Vehicle (MyAV) Testing Route Secretariat. This is a big step forward for Malaysia in the world of transportation technology.

During the launch of the MRANTI AV XL, Chang highlighted the global use of AV, including buses for the Tokyo Olympics and robotaxis on the streets of California, the US; Shenzhen, China; and across Germany. These examples show that AV is quickly gaining public acceptance around the world.

According to a study by McKinsey’s Centre for Future Mobility, it’s estimated that by 2030, at least 12% of new passenger cars will be sold with Level 3 to 5 autonomous technologies, and 37% will have advanced autonomous driving technologies by 2035. This could create up to US$400 billion in revenue globally, presenting lucrative prospects for various stakeholders.

The MRANTI AV XL comprises a 12km marked test route, enclosed multi-storey car park, a digital twin for virtual testing, 5G network coverage, and infrastructure for ultra-fast data transmission. This state-of-the-art facility is a key part of the effort to lower carbon emissions within the realm of land transportation, in line with the Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint 2021-2030.

In addition, the MRANTI AV XL is supportive of the National Automotive Policy (NAP) 2020, which includes creating an AV testbed and promoting Next-Generation Vehicles (NxGV) 78. It also aligns with the New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP) 2030, which highlights the automotive sector as a focus area, with specific attention on electric vehicles (EVs) and Renewable Energy 9.

The MRANTI AV XL is a significant step forward for Malaysia in the world of transportation technology. It’s set to revolutionize the way we think about mobility and pave the way for a more innovative and sustainable future.
