The Power of Organic Farming: A Healthier Future

2 min read

Are you tired of dealing with lifestyle diseases like diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and high blood pressure? Well, it’s time to make a change! According to nutritionist Janet Kahiga, the key to staying healthy is to grow and eat organic foods. She’s concerned that the increase in lifestyle diseases is due to poor eating habits, and she’s urging residents of Juja subcounty, Kiambu County to embrace organic farming.

Kahiga emphasized the importance of organic farming in protecting the soil from being damaged by chemical fertilisers. She pointed out that the rise in lifestyle diseases is linked to the growing of Genetically Modified crops, which has become common due to changes in rainfall patterns. Kahiga believes that the shift towards agribusiness has led to a decline in organic farming, resulting in a negative impact on people’s health.

MCA Moses Ngatha also echoed Kahiga’s sentiments, highlighting the economic and health benefits of organic farming. He encouraged farmers to return to traditional farming methods and emphasised the positive impact of organic foods on the well-being of senior citizens. Ngatha stressed that organic agriculture offers a sustainable and cost-effective approach for small-scale farmers, enabling them to increase production using locally available resources.

In addition to promoting organic farming, the duo called on the youth to support their elderly parents and acknowledged the challenges faced by senior citizens. The sensitization forum, led by Patrick Muchunu, received positive feedback from the elderly participants, who expressed gratitude for the initiative. However, they raised concerns about the high cost of living and appealed to the government to address this issue and increase their monthly stipends through the Inua Jamii programme.
