Nottingham City Council Faces Financial Challenges

2 min read

Nottingham City Council Has Just Released An Update On Its Financial Situation, And It Looks Like They’Re Facing Some Serious Money Troubles. The Report, Which Came Out On 13th November 2023, Shows That The Council Is Dealing With A Big Gap In Its Budget. This Is Happening Because Councils All Over The Country Are Struggling With Increased Demand For Social Care, More People Becoming Homeless, And The Effects Of Inflation.

According To The Report Presented To The Council’S Executive Board On 21st November, Even Though They’Ve Been Trying To Control Their Spending, They’Re Still Expecting To Overspend By A Whopping £23.3 Million This Year.

Now, The Council Wants To Make It Clear That They’Re Not Going Bankrupt. They Do Have Enough Money To Pay Their Staff, Suppliers, And Grant Recipients. But Because Of This Overspending, The Council’S Corporate Director For Finance And Resources, Ross Brown, Will Have To Figure Out What To Do Next. They’Ll Have To Take A Hard Look At Whether They Can Balance Their Budget This Year.

If They Find That It’S Just Not Possible To Balance The Budget, They Might Have To Issue A Report Under The Local Government Finance Act 1988. This Report Would Need To Be Considered By The Full Council Within 21 Days, And There Would Be Strict Spending Controls In Place During This Time. Basically, They’D Have To Stop Spending Money On Anything That’S Not Absolutely Necessary.

The Good News Is That The Council’S Senior Officers And Members Are Determined To Work With The Improvement And Assurance Board And The Department For Levelling Up, Housing And Communities To Get The Council’S Finances Back On Track For The Future.
