But Now, PhD Student Ishara Paranawithana And His Team Have Come Up With A Non-Invasive Way To Image The Brains Of Normal Hearing Infants Using Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (FNIRS). They Measured How The Language Areas Of The Babies’ Brains Develop And Connect As They Grow Older, Especially In The First Year Of Life. The Researchers Think That These Brain Images Can Be Used As Markers To Compare Against Those Of Infants With Hearing Impairment, To See How Their Language Development Is Affected. Their Findings Were Published In The Journal Of Neural Engineering. Paranawithana Explained That By Studying The Brains Of Infants Of Different Ages, They Could See How These Language Regions Become More Connected As The Babies Grow, And Compare This With The Connectivity Levels In Adults. This Helps Them Understand How Hearing-Impaired Infants Experience Language Delays. The Best Part Is That FNIRS Is A Cheap And Kid-Friendly Brain Imaging Technique That Can Be Used In Clinics. Having Tools That Can Diagnose Hearing Problems Early On Can Really Make A Difference For Infants With Impaired Hearing, Giving Them A Better Chance To Catch Up With Their Peers. The Research Team Believes That Their Findings Will Help Improve A New Bionics Device Called EarGenie, Which Is Currently In A Clinical Trial. Professor Colette McKay, The Lead Researcher At The Bionics Institute, Thinks That These Findings Will Help Track The Language Development Of Infants With Hearing Impairment And Speed Up Their Early Intervention.
