Shericka Jackson has been given an honorary Doctor of Laws degree by the University of Technology (UTech) for her amazing achievements in 2023. The World 200m champion was awarded the honorary Doctorate of Law Honoris Causa at the UTech graduation ceremony on Saturday. She’s one of three outstanding Jamaicans to receive this award at the 2023 Graduation Ceremony at the Papine Campus. The other two awardees are the Governor of the Bank of Jamaica, Richard Byles, and ICT and Engineering Process Control expert, Dr Patrick Dallas.
Shericka Jackson’s outstanding performances in 2023, where she defended her 200m world title and finished second in the 100m at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, led to her being awarded the honorary doctorate. She also achieved double gold (100m and 200m) at the Prefontaine Classic, the final Diamond League Meeting of 2023. Additionally, she became the second-fastest woman of all time over 200m, clocking 21.41 to set a championship record in Hungary. Her impressive times of 21.48 at the Brussels Diamond League Meeting, and 21.57 at the Prefontaine Classic, along with a personal best time of 10.65 at the Jamaican Championships, solidified her dominance in the sport.
Shericka Jackson’s mantra, ‘I’m not back, I’m better,’ has been a source of inspiration for her this season. She has been announced as one of the five finalists for the 2023 Women’s World Athlete of the Year award by World Athletics. The other finalists include women’s world marathon record holder Tigist Assefa, Dutch athlete Femke Bol, double world record holder Faith Kipyegon, and Venezuela’s Yulimar Rojas. With her exceptional performances, the MVP Track Club president and co-founder Bruce James is confident that Shericka Jackson has a strong chance of winning the Women’s World Athlete of the Year award.
