Project Speedbird: Paving the Way for Sustainable Aviation

2 min read

The aviation industry is making moves towards a greener future with the help of Project Speedbird, a collaboration between LanzaJet, British Airways, and Nova Pangaea Technologies. This project has secured a significant $11.2 million in funding from the Government’s Advanced Fuels Fund (AFF) competition. The funding will be used to increase the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and reduce the carbon footprint of the aviation industry.

Project Speedbird will utilize innovative technology to convert agricultural waste and wood residue feedstocks into second-generation biofuels, such as ethanol. LanzaJet’s proprietary technology will then convert the ethanol into SAF. The project aims to produce 27 million gallons of SAF per year, reducing CO2 emissions by 230,000 tons annually. This will support the UK’s SAF mandate, which requires at least 10% of jet fuel used by airlines to be made from sustainable feedstocks by 2030.

The leaders of the collaborating companies have expressed their excitement about the project. Jimmy Samartzis, CEO at LanzaJet, emphasized the importance of sustainable aviation fuels in meeting the industry’s climate goals. Sarah Ellerby, CEO of Nova Pangaea Technologies, highlighted the significance of the investment in accelerating the development of SAF technology. Carrie Harris, Director of Sustainability at British Airways, stressed the critical role of sustainable aviation fuel in meeting net zero targets.

The partnership between LanzaJet, British Airways, and Nova Pangaea Technologies represents a significant step towards decarbonizing the aviation sector. With the support of the UK Government and the commitment of these industry leaders, the production of SAF is set to increase, creating employment opportunities and contributing to the UK’s net zero targets.

Project Speedbird is a pioneering initiative that aligns with the UK Government’s commitment to commercialize sustainable aviation fuels and lead in zero-emission flight. The funding from the Advanced Fuels Fund will further support the development of SAF projects in the UK, marking a significant milestone in the aviation industry’s transition towards a more sustainable future.
