After much anticipation, Knaresborough’s brand spanking new Leisure and Wellness Centre is set to open to the public on December 11th. Originally planned for a summer opening, the £17.6m state-of-the-art facility was delayed due to electrical supply issues, but now residents can look forward to a perfect early Christmas present for the town.
This new leisure centre is a significant upgrade from the now-shuttered Knaresborough Pool, boasting impressive features such as a six-lane 25-metre pool, a leisure pool with an exciting flume, and a top-notch 60-station fitness suite. Additionally, there’s a studio for group fitness classes, a group cycling studio, sauna and steam rooms for post-workout relaxation, a cafe for a spot of refreshment, and an outdoor children’s play area to keep the little ones entertained.
Situated on King James Road, adjacent to the former Knaresborough Pool, the new centre stands as a testament to modern development, replacing the 1990-built facility. Originally, the old pool was intended to remain operational until the new centre was ready. However, due to construction delays and escalating costs, North Yorkshire Council made the decision to close the old venue to save on expenses.
Councillor Simon Myers, the Executive member for culture and leisure, expressed his delight at finally having an opening date for the long-awaited facility. He highlighted the community’s need for more than just a traditional swimming pool and stressed the importance of providing spaces for fitness classes and post-exercise relaxation, aiming to promote a healthier and more active lifestyle for the residents of Knaresborough.
This development is part of a broader £47.9m investment in leisure facilities across North Yorkshire, including the recent refurbishment of Harrogate Leisure and Wellness Centre and the Jack Laugher Leisure and Wellness Centre in Ripon. Managed by Brimhams Active, the council’s health and wellbeing company, these centres offer a comprehensive range of amenities to cater to the diverse needs of the local population.
With the new leisure centre opening soon, residents of Knaresborough have a lot to look forward to. The facility promises to not only provide a space for physical activity but also to foster a sense of community and promote overall health and wellbeing.
