Tucked away on Park Street is Silk Road, a new Central Asian restaurant offering an authentic taste of Tajik cuisine. Owner and chef, Manuchehr “Manu” Kholov, has brought the vibrant flavours and cultural experience of Central Asia to Madison, Wisconsin.
As patrons leave Silk Road, they are given a small wooden camel, reminiscent of the animals that once travelled the legendary Silk Road. This historic trade route connected China to the Middle East, facilitating exchanges of culture, religion, and cuisine. Now, Silk Road on Park Street is a hub of Central Asian culinary artistry.
The restaurant is adorned with traditional Tajik plates, tablecloths, and vibrant attire, creating an atmosphere that transports diners to Central Asia. Owner Manu Kholov, a native of Tajikistan, draws on his culinary expertise and cultural background to bring an authentic experience to Madison. With his wife, Hannah Hamelman, by his side, they have created a dining destination that is rich in cultural heritage and culinary excellence.
Kholov’s journey to becoming a chef began in his hometown in Tajikistan, where he honed his skills in some of the country’s finest restaurants. Along the way, he met and fell in love with Hamelman, whose own journey of cultural exploration led her to embrace Islam and the diverse traditions of Central Asia. Together, they have brought their shared passion for Central Asian cuisine to the heart of Madison.
Their menu boasts a diverse array of dishes, such as the Tajik elixir, a refreshing blend of lime, ginger, mint, orange, and lemon, accompanied by locally sourced honey. Visitors can also enjoy a grilled peach salad with a unique thyme-infused vinaigrette and savoury lamb served on a bed of rice with garbanzo beans, cashews, and raisins. For dessert, guests can indulge in künefe, a delightful delicacy of shredded phyllo dough and mozzarella cheese, served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
The restaurant also offers a selection of intriguing drinks imported from Russia, including lemon with elderflower and mint juice, as well as pear, quince, and tarhun sodas. With such a diverse menu and warm ambience, a visit to Silk Road promises an unforgettable culinary adventure through the heart of Central Asia.
With its commitment to preserving traditional flavours and cultural heritage, Silk Road is a welcome addition to Madison’s culinary scene. As the warmer months approach, diners can look forward to savouring their meals on the outdoor patio. Whether you’re a connoisseur of international cuisine or a curious food enthusiast, Silk Road on Park is a culinary journey you won’t want to miss!
