Empowering the Next Generation: New Partnership Promotes Youth Entrepreneurship and Agriculture

3 min read

The Department of Education has recently collaborated with Go Negosyo to launch an initiative aimed at empowering Filipino youth through entrepreneurship and agriculture. This memorandum of agreement (MoA) was signed by Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte and Go Negosyo founder Jose Maria “Joey” Concepcion 3rd during the organization’s 18th anniversary in Makati City.

The primary objective of this partnership is to instill an entrepreneurial mindset among the youth, foster mentorship opportunities, enhance financial literacy, and promote awareness of agriculture-related opportunities. The programs outlined in the MoA include the “Pampaaralang Taniman ng mga Agribida (PTA),” a public entrepreneurship mentoring event called Youthpreneur, and Mentoring the Mentors, which is designed to equip teachers with the necessary skills to teach entrepreneurship concepts in the classroom.

Education Secretary Duterte emphasized the importance of nurturing an innovative mindset among the youth, emphasizing that it is essential for the progress and development of the nation. She expressed enthusiasm about the partnership and underscored the significance of developing a curriculum that integrates real-world examples and hands-on activities to foster an entrepreneurial spirit among students.

One notable initiative is the introduction of basic agriculture concepts to high school students, with a focus on establishing school gardens. Duterte explained that school gardens serve as a platform for communities to come together, work towards a common goal, and promote healthy eating habits.

Go Negosyo founder, Jose Maria “Joey” Concepcion 3rd, emphasized the success of the organization’s public-private partnerships, particularly in the agriculture sector. He highlighted the growing interest of young Filipinos in entrepreneurship and stressed the importance of institutionalizing entrepreneurship training for future entrepreneurs through partnerships with educational institutions.

The recent pilot run of the “Youthpreneur” program, which drew participation from senior high school students in the National Capital Region, served as a testament to the potential success of future initiatives aimed at nurturing the next generation of Filipino entrepreneurs.

Moving forward, a technical working group comprising members of DepEd and Go Negosyo will be established to oversee the implementation of the MoA. Under this agreement, DepEd will provide policy guidance, data, and program evaluation, while Go Negosyo will be responsible for providing mentors, securing support and resources, and leading the implementation efforts in collaboration with DepEd.

The partnership between the Department of Education and Go Negosyo represents a significant step towards empowering Filipino youth with valuable entrepreneurial skills and agricultural awareness. By equipping the next generation with the knowledge and resources needed to succeed in these fields, the initiative holds the potential to contribute to the long-term economic development of the Philippines.
