Airside Digitization Technology to Be Trialled at King Khalid Airport

Riyadh Airports Company (RAC) has reached a significant milestone in airport technology by recently entering into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with ADB Safegate. The primary goal of this partnership is to pilot a range of innovative solutions in airside digitization at King Khalid International Airport (KKIA).

The agreement between RAC and ADB Safegate will involve discussions and trials of technical products related to automation, monitoring, and preventive maintenance. The exploration of advanced technology, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, advanced video analytics, virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality, the Internet of Things, and digital twins will be a key focus. Additionally, there is consideration for the potential integration of 5G communication technology in the airport apron area, as well as the enhancement of existing products such as the Airport Management Platform (AMP), Visual Docking Guidance System (VDGS), SafeControl Apron Management (now AiPRON Manager), and the Airfield Lighting Control and Monitoring System (ALCMS).

Osama Al-Fawaz, the chief information officer (CIO) of RAC, has affirmed the company’s dedication to developing diverse plans and initiatives to collaborate with global partners. Al-Fawaz emphasized the pivotal role of technology in air operations management, reflecting its increasing importance in airports worldwide.

Meanwhile, Laurent Dubois, CEO of ADB Safegate, has praised the collaboration with RAC as a significant milestone, highlighting the visionary approach of RAC and its eagerness to adopt the latest advancements in airport management. Dubois expressed confidence that this partnership will set new industry standards for operational excellence.

The ongoing trial of airside digitization technology at KKIA in partnership with ADB Safegate underscores RAC’s dedication to technological advancement and innovation in airport operations.
