The Best Festive Sandwiches: Tesco vs. Sainsbury’s

2 min read

‘Tis the season for an abundance of festive food and drink, and one popular item that seems to undergo a seasonal transformation is the humble sandwich. As an individual who routinely prepares their own lunch, I made the decision to visit my local branches of Tesco and Sainsbury’s in order to sample their offerings of festive sandwiches and determine which one reigns supreme.

Among the sandwiches I acquired were Sainsbury’s ‘Pigs Under Blankets’ and ‘Turkey Feast,’ as well as Tesco’s classic ‘Brie and Cranberry.’ The shelves were still abundantly stocked with a variety of festive fillings, and I wasted no time in making my selections.

Firstly, let us consider Sainsbury’s ‘Turkey Feast,’ which boasts chunky slices of turkey breast, bacon, sage and onion stuffing, cranberry chutney, and mayonnaise. This sandwich, priced at £3 or £3.50 as part of a meal deal, certainly satisfied all expectations. The turkey was notably succulent, and the cranberry sauce complemented the smoky bacon flawlessly. It presents itself as a traditional option for the Christmas season, and I would gladly rate it 8/10 for its flavour and filling.

Moving on to Sainsbury’s ‘Pigs Under Blankets,’ priced the same as the ‘Turkey Feast.’ This sandwich features Cumberland sausages, bacon, cranberry chutney, and mayonnaise. While the differing amounts of cranberry chutney on each half were a slight drawback, the sandwich offered a delightful balance of sweet and savoury flavours. This substantial option may not distinctly evoke Christmas, but it certainly satisfies hunger pangs, earning a respectable 6/10 in my estimation.

Lastly, we have Tesco’s ‘Brie and Cranberry’ sandwich, priced at a reasonable £2.85 or as part of a meal deal. Creamy French brie, cranberry sauce, mayonnaise, and spinach on malted bread emerged as the ultimate winner. The bread was light and airy, the fillings were well-proportioned, and the harmonious combination of flavours was truly delightful. It was refreshing, rich in festive flavours, and left me yearning for more. This sandwich unquestionably deserves a solid 9/10 for its overall quality.

In light of my tasting experience, it is evident that Tesco’s ‘Brie and Cranberry’ has emerged as the definitive champion of festive sandwiches. With its impeccable blend of flavours and generous portions, this sandwich unquestionably ranks as a winner in my assessment. Therefore, as you engage in your festive feasting, I highly recommend giving it a try and experiencing its excellence for yourself.
