The medical technology industry in Europe is experiencing significant growth, with a workforce exceeding 850,000 individuals employed by 35,000 companies. This sector has emerged as a pivotal driver in the continent’s economic landscape, showcasing a positive trade balance of €5.2 billion in medical technologies.
At the MedTech Europe Policy Pulse Conference on 16th November 2023, Oliver Bisazza, CEO of MedTech Europe, underscored the European Union’s crucial role in transforming healthcare. Looking ahead, he stressed the upcoming EU elections as an important opportunity for Europe to demonstrate its dedication to prioritising the health and wellbeing of its citizens. Bisazza called for the next institutional cycle to pave the way for improved health outcomes across the continent.
In response to these sentiments, MedTech Europe introduced its ambitious ‘Manifesto for 2024-2029’ titled “Empowering Patients, Inspiring Innovation”. This manifesto highlights four key priorities for the European Institutions, focusing on a patient-centric approach, embracing digital solutions, bolstering healthcare resilience, and promoting environmental sustainability in medical technologies.
During the conference, Rob ten Hoedt, the outgoing Chairman of the MedTech Europe Board, discussed the significant progress made in medical technologies over the past decade. He also predicted further advancements driven by digitalization and artificial intelligence in the coming years, foreseeing remote monitoring, early detection, and improved productivity for medical professionals.
The event featured thematic panels that explored critical topics such as digital health and innovation. Industry experts, along with representatives from the European Parliament and European Commission, discussed trends in digital tools, the necessity of digital infrastructure, data security, and the potential of the European Health Data Space. Additionally, the innovation panel focused on creating an environment conducive to innovation, addressing challenges faced by SMEs, sustainability, and the evolving role of data in the industry.
Insightful interviews and fireside chats between Oliver Bisazza and Flora Giorgio, Head of Unit for Medical Devices in the European Commission, provided valuable perspectives on navigating regulatory landscapes, fostering collaboration, and addressing industry milestones. This demonstrated a commitment to overcoming challenges and creating a collaborative, innovative future for the European medical technology sector.
