Revamping Nanas: A Look Inside the Iconic Durham Dining Establishment

Durham’s esteemed Nanas is poised to make a spectacular return next week, as the restaurant unveils its doors following an extensive refurbishment. Led by the esteemed chef and Durham native, Matt Kelly, the iconic establishment has undergone a comprehensive makeover, seamlessly blending traditional charm with a contemporary touch.

Established in 1992, Nanas has long been a cornerstone of the local dining scene, captivating diners with its exquisite Italian and French cuisine. For many, the restaurant holds a special place in their hearts, having hosted countless family dinners and celebrations. The decision to breathe new life into Nanas arose when Kelly and his partner, Nate Garyantes, assumed ownership in 2022, following the restaurant’s closure due to the pandemic.

The duo embarked on a meticulous two-year journey to rejuvenate Nanas, overseeing a detailed redesign and renovation. The result is a breathtaking reimagination of the thirty-year-old institution, characterized by vibrant orange and purple walls, stylish rust-colored carpets, and opulent chartreuse-cushioned booths. The new aesthetic pays homage to the restaurant’s illustrious history while infusing it with a fresh and contemporary allure.

Shaun Sundholm, the visionary behind Nanas’s transformation, drew inspiration from his travels through Mexico and Europe, as well as the picturesque landscapes of Durham. He carefully preserved unique architectural elements while incorporating sylvan textures and colours that evoke a sense of warmth and nostalgia. From emerald ceramic tiles that echo the greenery of North Carolina pines to dark walnut slats mirroring the depth of tree trunks, every detail exudes a harmonious blend of nature and sophistication.

The menu at Nanas reflects a similar approach, featuring classic French and Italian dishes infused with Piedmont and coastal North Carolina ingredients. Dishes such as twice-baked grits soufflé, whole roasted North Carolina fish, and chicken liver paté mousse exemplify the restaurant’s dedication to utilizing locally sourced, premium ingredients to craft culinary masterpieces.

The interior design also pays homage to the restaurant’s heritage, with a tufted orange velvet bench named after Scott Howell, the original owner of Nanas, serving as an elegant reminder of the past. The transformed space, with its warm lighting and refined mid-century modern aesthetic, invites guests to partake in a dining experience that expertly balances traditional charm with contemporary sophistication.
