TAFE NSW Loftus is preparing to introduce a new mental health unit into its fitness courses, a move that has received accolades from the fitness community and industry experts.
Barrie Elvish, CEO of AusActive and a prominent advocate for the mental health benefits of exercise, has praised the decision, emphasizing the importance of providing future fitness instructors with the skills to support their clients’ mental wellbeing.
Mr Elvish commented, “The incorporation of mental health in the Certificate III in Fitness is a commendable progression by TAFE NSW. Ensuring that fitness professionals understand mental health and the advantages of physical activity for mental fitness from the beginning of their careers will enable them to effectively support their clients.”
A recent AusPlay survey revealed that 31% of respondents are motivated to exercise to preserve their mental wellness, a figure that has nearly doubled in the past five years.
In response to industry requirements, TAFE NSW Loftus will offer the Certificate III in Fitness in 2024, featuring an elective unit entitled ‘working with people with a mental health condition’, which was added after consulting with industry stakeholders.
This qualification prepares graduates for careers as fitness instructors, a profession that is projected to grow by 9.8% over the next five years, according to Jobs and Skills Australia.
Andrew Stewart, Head Teacher of Health and Recreation at TAFE NSW, emphasized the evolving needs of the industry, stating, “The link between mental health and physical activity has become more prominent post-COVID-19. Current research indicates that the primary reason people attend gyms is to enhance their mental health.”
He further stressed the importance of preparing graduates to have a positive impact in the industry, noting, “This qualification is comprehensive and extremely rewarding, as it empowers individuals to guide others on their health and fitness journey.”
In addition to the mental health unit, the course covers essential subjects such as anatomy and physiology, screening and assessment, and planning and instructing group exercise.
The integration of mental health training in fitness courses at Loftus TAFE signifies a significant step forward in enabling future fitness professionals to support the holistic wellbeing of their clients.
