BMW and Airbus Collaborate to Tackle Quantum Challenges in Aviation and Automotive

3 min read

Airbus and BMW Group have recently announced the launch of a pioneering initiative known as “The Quantum Mobility Quest.” This groundbreaking project aims to address the most formidable challenges in the aviation and automotive sectors, which have previously proven insurmountable for conventional computers.

This unique collaboration between two global industry leaders represents a significant milestone, as it marks the first time that quantum technologies will be used for practical industrial purposes. The primary objective is to unlock the potential for developing more efficient, sustainable, and safer transportation solutions for the future.

Quantum computing has the capacity to significantly enhance computational power, enabling the execution of highly complex operations that are currently beyond the capabilities of even the most advanced computers available today. This promising technology holds particular relevance for data-driven industries like transportation, as it has the potential to play a pivotal role in simulating various industrial and operational processes, thereby opening up opportunities to shape future mobility products and services.

Participants in the challenge are invited to select from a range of problem statements, including improved aerodynamics design with quantum solvers, future automated mobility through quantum machine learning, more sustainable supply chains with quantum optimization, and enhanced corrosion inhibition using quantum simulation. Additionally, candidates have the option to propose their own quantum technologies with the potential to develop innovative apps that have not yet been explored in the transportation sector.

The challenge is being organized by The Quantum Insider (TQI) and is divided into two phases. The first phase, which spans four months, entails participants developing a theoretical framework for one of the given statements. The subsequent phase will involve selected finalists implementing and benchmarking their solutions. Amazon Web Services (AWS) is providing candidates with the opportunity to run their algorithms on their Amazon Braket quantum computing service.

A panel comprising world-leading quantum experts will collaborate with professionals from Airbus, BMW Group, and AWS to evaluate the proposals submitted by the candidates. At the conclusion of the challenge in 2024, one winning team from each of the five challenges will be awarded a prize of €30,000.

The collaboration between Airbus and BMW Group represents an exciting opportunity to push the boundaries of quantum computing and drive innovation in the aviation and automotive industries. Through the amalgamation of their expertise and resources, these industry leaders are demonstrating a steadfast commitment to driving progress and shaping the future of transportation through the application of cutting-edge quantum technologies.
