A major exhibition titled “KNOX: Order and Beauty” will open in April 2025 on the Isle of Man, featuring the largest collection of Archibald Knox’s works. More than 200 items will be displayed, celebrating Knox’s impact as a designer inspired by Manx culture. The event is part of a broader campaign to showcase the Isle of Man’s artistic heritage and promote local engagement with Knox’s legacy.

The Isle of Man will showcase the largest collection of Archibald Knox’s works in a major exhibition titled “KNOX: Order and Beauty,” set to open in April 2025. Knox (1864-1933), a celebrated designer associated with Liberty & Co., drew profound inspiration from the Isle of Man, where he was both born and lived throughout his life. This exhibition will feature more than 200 diverse items, including silverware, jewellery, and textiles, with many pieces on public display for the first time.

Organised by Manx National Heritage and the Archibald Knox Forum, this exhibition will raise awareness of Knox’s contributions to modern design and his deep connection to the Island’s cultural landscape. The event forms part of the broader “Isle of Knox” campaign, promoting the cultural significance of Knox’s legacy through associated activities in 2025 and early 2026. Visitors will also be able to follow a new Knox Trail, examining the natural beauty that inspired his creations, alongside the option to contribute any personal Knox items for display.

Chris Hobdell of the Archibald Knox Forum expressed the timeless strength of Knox’s designs, reflecting the spiritual and natural essence of the Isle of Man. Curator Katie King highlighted the exhibition’s unique pieces, noting it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to view Knox’s art. Deborah Heather from Visit Isle of Man described the exhibition as a way to place the Isle of Man prominently on the world stage, much like Glasgow’s recognition of Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

Archibald Knox was a pivotal figure in the Arts and Crafts movement, particularly known for his designs at Liberty & Co. He integrated influences from Celtic art and modernist styles, combining function with decorative beauty. His works often reflected the identity and spirit of the Isle of Man, making it a significant part of his creative journey. The upcoming exhibition seeks to encapsulate his legacy, drawing from a century-long collection effort by Manx National Heritage.

The “KNOX: Order and Beauty” exhibition represents a significant cultural milestone for the Isle of Man, celebrating Archibald Knox’s artistic legacy. With an array of never-before-seen items and an engaging programme of events, the exhibition promises to enrich understanding of Knox’s contributions to modern design while inviting visitors to connect more intimately with the landscapes that influenced his work.
