“Hamad Butt: Apprehensions” is a retrospective exhibition celebrating the work of Hamad Butt, organised by IMMA and Whitechapel Gallery, from December 6, 2024, to May 5, 2025. It features major installations and previously unseen pieces, addressing themes of mortality and societal crises related to HIV/AIDS. The exhibition also includes a catalogue with scholarly contributions, marking the first extensive study of Butt’s work.

The exhibition “Hamad Butt: Apprehensions” is the first retrospective showcasing the work of the influential artist Hamad Butt (1962-1994), who was British South Asian, Muslim, and queer. Organised by IMMA and Whitechapel Gallery, it runs from December 6, 2024, to May 5, 2025. Butt’s art addressed the HIV/AIDS crisis through subtle references rather than direct activism. His major works, including the iconic “Transmission” and “Familiars”, have never been exhibited together or outside the UK. The exhibition aims to rectify the oversight of Butt’s contributions to contemporary art by presenting a comprehensive collection of his pieces, including sculpture installations, paintings, and a videotaped interview. Curated by Dominic Johnson, the exhibition also features essays from various scholars and artists in an accompanying catalogue, marking the first extensive study of Butt’s oeuvre.

Hamad Butt was a pivotal figure in the British art scene, part of a generation affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. His work reflects a profound engagement with themes of mortality, vulnerability, and cultural identity, often through the lens of marginalised perspectives. Unlike contemporaries who employed overt activism, Butt’s artistry was more introspective, employing metaphor and nuance to address the societal impacts of disease and disaster. His retrospective seeks to re-establish his significance within art history, especially considering the historical neglect of queer and diasporic voices in contemporary art narratives.

The exhibition “Hamad Butt: Apprehensions” serves to highlight and honour the artistic legacy of Hamad Butt, whose innovative approach to themes of illness and identity remains relevant today. By showcasing previously unseen works and significant installations, the retrospective aims to reshape the understanding of Butt’s contributions to art. Through scholarly essays and curatorial efforts, the exhibition not only elevates Butt’s status but also connects his work to ongoing discussions around health, race, and cultural crises facing contemporary society.
