Grayson Perry’s exhibition “Delusions of Grandeur” opens on 28 March 2025 at the Wallace Collection, coinciding with his 65th birthday. It will showcase over 40 new artworks and explore themes such as the intersection of gender, the authenticity of art creation, and the influence of outsider art, making it the largest contemporary show at the museum.

Sir Grayson Perry will mark his 65th birthday with a significant exhibition titled “Grayson Perry: Delusions of Grandeur” at London’s Wallace Collection, opening on 28 March 2025. This exhibition will explore themes from Perry’s extensive career, featuring over 40 new artworks inspired by the museum’s collection, which includes works by Titian and Velázquez, and will be the largest contemporary art exhibition at the venue.

Throughout his career, Perry has engaged with the historical contrasts within the Wallace Collection, primarily the juxtaposition of feminine Rococo art and masculine arms and armour. His work often critiques rigid gender norms and is set to highlight this theme through new creations, crafted using diverse materials and techniques. The exhibition invites visitors to reflect on authenticity in art, showcasing handcrafted items alongside digitally created pieces.

Additionally, Perry will introduce a fictional character, Shirley Smith, who navigates life in the Wallace Collection after a personal crisis, exploring notions of ‘outsider art’. His engagement with works by outsider artists like Aloïse Corbaz and Madge Gill has deeply influenced his perspective. As Perry develops this exhibition with director Xavier Bray, they aim to surprise and challenge perceptions of art across various mediums. Following this, Perry’s earlier works, including tapestries inspired by Hogarth, will also be exhibited in West London, enriching his narrative within the art community.

The upcoming exhibition at the Wallace Collection is a celebration of Grayson Perry’s artistic journey and his 65th birthday. The Wallace Collection, renowned for its fine art, provides a rich contextual backdrop for Perry’s new works. The exhibition aims to provoke thought on the nature of art-making, particularly regarding issues of gender, authenticity, and the contrast between craftsmanship and digital creation. Perry’s use of a fictional persona adds a unique narrative layer to his artistic exploration.

Grayson Perry’s “Delusions of Grandeur” promises a fascinating look at his career and the themes that inspire him. Through the show, he aims to explore complex ideas around gender roles in art, the juxtaposition of authenticity versus digital creation, and the significance of outsider art. This exhibition not only celebrates his milestone birthday but also positions Perry’s work within a broader art historical context, encouraging visitors to reconsider their perceptions of art.
