Lethaby Gallery at Central Saint Martins presents “Soil, Toil & Table,” an exhibition focused on food, culture, and sustainability. Running from 5 December 2024 to 25 January 2025, it features over 70 works curated by students, exploring themes of environmental impact and sustainable practices. Visitors will engage with various installations that invite reflection on their food choices.

This December, Lethaby Gallery at Central Saint Martins will host “Soil, Toil & Table,” an innovative exhibition that examines our intricate ties to land, food production, and sustainability. From 5 December 2024 to 25 January 2025, the exhibition will be entirely curated by students and recent graduates of Central Saint Martins, presenting over 70 works that address the urgent global issues of environmental degradation and cultural disconnection.

Featuring various forms of creative expression, including fashion and bio-inspired design, the exhibition encourages reflection on food systems and sustainable practices. Visitors will explore approaches to reducing waste and enhancing food literacy through installations that encourage interaction—inviting them to smell, feel, and even taste elements of nature. For example, one artwork transforms used coffee grounds into sustainable dining ware, while another captures London’s growing interest in urban gardens.

The exhibition also includes experiences like audio-guided walks in UK farmland, allowing attendees to connect with the sounds of agricultural landscapes. According to Fergus Main, co-curator of the show, the exhibition emerged from a deep exploration of the UK farming industry and aims to rekindle connections between consumers and food origins amidst increasing industrialisation. Lethaby Gallery continues its tradition of engaging with pressing global issues through creative exploration and dialogue.

Lethaby Gallery, known for spotlighting contemporary issues through art, presents a timely exhibition that addresses the intersections of food, culture, and sustainability. This focus is increasingly relevant given rising concerns over environmental impacts and food security. Curated by Central Saint Martins students, the exhibition serves as a platform for innovative artists to express critical ideas around consumer habits and the agricultural system, making it an essential visit for anyone interested in these pressing topics.

The “Soil, Toil & Table” exhibition at Lethaby Gallery stands out as a crucial initiative that bridges art and urgent social issues related to food production and sustainability. It not only highlights the challenges within these systems but also encourages creative solutions and greater awareness among the public. Visitors will leave with a deeper understanding of their connection to food and the importance of sustainable practices in everyday life.
